Rawlings
Baseball Gloves
If
you are a parent of a young aspiring baseball player,
think hard about purchasing used leather Rawlings baseball
gloves. Many of the cheap baseball gloves you
see on the market are plastic or some fake version of
leather. Having coached for over 40 years at the
high school level and beyond, including Cal Ripken baseball,
if you want to give your son/daughter a honest chance
of finding success catching a ball, then please get
them a used baseball mitt. I will cover youth
baseball gloves more in depth if you follow the
link.
If
you visit a retail shop online like Baseball Express,
you will not find a used baseball glove. Best places
to find them are at garage sales or find a kid who has
graduated and will not play again. Because I've coached
some many kids over the years, they know I can hook
them up with a young player who might be interested
in a used glove. Don't be afraid to ask the high
school or even middle school players if they would be
willing to part with their used glove.
Just
because this site is Rawlings, don't be afraid to purchase
a used "Leather" glove from these manufacturers:
- Easton

- Wilson

- Nokona

Baseball Gloves
I
would say over half of all my players at the higher
levels use Rawlings baseball gloves. Heart of the Hide
is one solid baseball glove that makes a lot of sense,
however you need to realize it takes time to break in
a Rawlings mitt. I've always told my players to
purchase a new mitt a year before you plan on making
it a gamer.
You
can find some lower end Rawlings mitts that are leather
and do not take as much time to break in. However, they
do not stand up to the riggers of higher level games.
My son played American Legion baseball and broke
his mitt several times that first season at the Juniors
level. We did purchase the Heart of the Hide series
for infielders and it has stood the test of time. At
the Junior College Level he stepped up to the Rawlings
Pro Preferred
Models.
Proper
care of your Rawlings baseball gloves is critical. If
you are a coach, teach your players how to clean their
gloves nightly, how to oil their mitts to keep the leather
in shape and double check the knots. It doesn't
take long to clean a glove and this is one habit that
will greatly benefit the parents pocketbook.
If
your son/daughter is at the upper levels of high school
they have probably specialized in an area. It could
be a pitcher, catcher, infield, outfield or first baseman.
Each specialized area requires a different glove
to compete at their maximum. Yes, you can purchase
a glove to try and fit all areas, however it will get
really frustrating to watch them try and pull the ball
out of an oversized mitt.

Rawlings Outfielders
Gloves
I
personally like to recommend the Trapeze gloves to all
outfielders. Yes, Ichiro Suzuki uses a version
of this glove (not Rawlings) but the same web design
exists with many different manufacturers. This
is one I found at Amazon and it's reasonably priced.
What I like about it, is the fact it is modified
somewhat from the original versions and it contains
a nice piece of leather at the top between the thumb
and index finger.
This
added strip allows the ball to stick in
the glove in case of a snow cone catch.
I've watched several players in the
summer drop balls because their gloves did
not contain that added layer of leather
that secures the ball and mitt.
Rawlings
has many other versions of outfielder mitts
and my recommendation is to find something
you like at a local store, head online and
see who has the best price. You can
normally get free shipping
